Abstract
Introduction: There is a perception that women's rallies are longer than men's, due to the lower power of the attacks, in parallel with the greater chance of defense compared to men.
Objective: To compare the duration and number of rallies per set between the men's and women's volleyball teams.
Methods: Videos of six matches (three men's and three women's) were analyzed, totaling 11 men's sets and 12 women's sets from the finals of the Volleyball Nations League in the years 2019, 2021 and 2022, available on the Volleyball World TV website. The duration of the rallies was recorded with a manual stopwatch and the number of rallies was counted manually. Rallies were also categorized into short, medium and long. The t-test and the χ² test were used for data analysis.
Results: The average time and number of rallies per set were higher in the women's teams compared to the men's. The number of long rallies was also higher in the women's teams.
Conclusion: In high-performance starts, the number and duration of rallies are higher in women's teams compared to men's.
