Abstract
Introduction: Physical fitness is an essential factor for sports performance that provides, in addition to optimizing performance during training and competitions, the prevention of injuries, being very important in the process of human growth and development.
Objective: To examine the effects of 21 weeks of volleyball physical-technical training on the physical fitness of adolescent athletes from a volleyball team (youth category) in the region of Joinville/SC.
Methods: Observational, longitudinal study, with a convenience sample, which included the participation of 14 male athletes from the base team of the Joinville Volleyball Association (14-16 years old). The following were analyzed: explosive force of the lower limbs (LL); localized muscle endurance; flexibility, body adiposity index (BAI) and fat percentage (%F). The paired Student's t-test was used to compare the effects before and after the training period (21 weeks). The level of significance was p<0.05.
Results: There was a significant difference in the IAC, which was 19.2±3.1% before 21 weeks of training and 17.6±2.4% (p=0.0007) with a small effect size (d=0.57; 95%CI = -0.21 – 1.37). There was also a significant difference in explosive strength of the lower limbs (p=0.01) with large effect size (d=0.82; 95%CI=0.01 – 1.63); and flexibility (p=0.00) with mean inverse effect size (d = -0.89; 95%CI = -1.70 – -0.07).
Conclusion: These findings showed that sports practice contributes to improving physical fitness capabilities in adolescent amateur athletes and indicate the need for specialized follow-up, aiming to improve performance during training and championships, as well as to promote healthy growth/development.
