Abstract

Introduction: Androgen hormones play an important role in men's health. Its deficiency begins gradually from the age of 30, bringing physical symptoms and impact on quality of life. On the other hand, the practice of physical exercise is one of the main non-pharmacological strategies that promote health and well-being, bringing benefits to muscle mass and body composition due to the regulation of hormone levels.

Objective: To investigate the effects of physical exercise on hormone levels in young adult men.

Methods: This is an integrative review with a qualitative approach, descriptive and exploratory in nature of the literature. The electronic collections and journals of the Virtual Health Library (VHL), PubMed, Web of Science and SPORTDiscus, the last three of which were accessed through the Portal of Journals of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) were consulted to search for intervention studies on hormonal markers vs. resistance/combined and aerobic training in young adult men,  published between 2020 and 2024 with an age range of 20 to 26 years and written in Portuguese or English.

Results and Discussion: Exercise when planned, structured and repetitive raises testosterone and IGF-1 levels in young adult men and depends on the combination of intensity and volume of the programs to promote benefits for both physical fitness and endocrine health.

Conclusion: The studies included in this review reinforce the role of physical exercise as a non-pharmacological strategy for promoting men's health, highlighting the short- and long-term effects on the hormonal axis.
